CONCLUSE LE CERIMONIE PER LA SETTIMANA DI PREGHIERA PER L’UNITA’ DEI CRISTIANI PRESSO IL GRAN BALIATO DI SICILIA

Si sono concluse con un grande successo le cerimonie che per tre giorni hanno visto impegnati i membri del Gran Baliato di Sicilia per la settimana di preghiera per l’unità dei cristiani, con la partecipazione del Gran Maestro e di una numerosa rappresentanza di varie giurisdizioni.

Il 23 gennaio è stata la volta del Congresso internazionale sull’ecumenismo e sulle attuali prospettive, organizzato dall’Accademia Lazzarita San Luigi IX Re di Francia, presso la Pontificia Facoltà Teologica di Sicilia, presieduto dal Cappellano Maggiore del Gran Baliato, Mons. Gualtiero Isacchi, Arcivescovo di Monreale, e moderato dal Preside della Facoltà Prof. Don Vito Impellizzeri.

Al convegno hanno partecipato rappresentanti della Chiesa Cattolica, sia di rito latino che di rito bizantino, della chiesa Valdese, di quella hussita cecoslovacca, della chiesa avventista e di quella anglicana, del patriarcato di Mosca e del patriarcato ecumenico di Costantinopoli.

Durante il convegno è stato pure presentato il volume sulla Chiesa Capitolare del Sacro Cuore, che illustra la storia e le bellezze artistiche, anche di recente acquisizione, di quella che dal 2019 è la sede istituzionale dell’Ordine in Sicilia.

La sera del Convegno ha avuto luogo un pranzo di benvenuto presso il Circolo Unione di Palermo, alla presenza dei membri del Consiglio di Governo del Gran Baliato, dei membri del Gran Magistero presenti a Palermo e degli altri capi giurisdizione, durante il quale sono stati donati al Gran Maestro una croce ottagona in bronzo del periodo delle Crociate (XII secolo) ed al Gran Priore Ecclesiastico un’icona dipinta a mano della Vergine Odigitria, realizzata dagli artigiani dell’enclave bizantina siciliana di Piana degli Albanesi.

Sabato mattina il Gran Maestro, poi, è stato ricevuto dalle autorità cittadine di Monreale ed ha compiuto una visita alla cattedrale ed al chiostro di Monreale ed al complesso monumentale Guglielmo II.

Il pomeriggio del 24 gennaio, presso l’Abbazia di San Martino delle Scale ha avuto luogo la solenne veglia ecumenica che chiude la settimana di preghiera per l’unità dei cristiani e precede i solenni riti di investitura della domenica.

La veglia è stata presieduta dal Gran Priore Emerito dell’Ordine Mons. Michele Pennisi, Cappellano Maggiore Emerito del Gran Baliato ed Arcivescovo emerito di Monreale, mentre le omelie sono state tenute da quattro cappellani dell’Ordine, l’abate di San Martino delle Scale Dom Vittorio Rizzone, il Pastore della Chiesa Avventista Rev. Vincenzo Bottari, il Vescovo della Chiesa d’Inghilterra David Hamid ed il Vescovo Hussita Lukáš Ian Bujna; quest’ultimo, alla fine della veglia, ha insignito il Gran Balì, il Cappellano Maggiore, il Cancelliere e l’Abate di San Martino con la medaglia d’oro del Lazarite Auxiliary Service per l’eccezionale contributo alla causa dell’ecumenismo e la devozione ai valori dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro.

Domenica mattina, infine, presso la cappella Roano, all’interno della cattedrale di Monreale, alla presenza del Gran Maestro e presieduti dal Cappellano Maggiore del Gran Baliato Arcivescovo Isacchi, ha avuto luogo il solenne rito di giuramento ed insediamento del nuovo Gran Priore Ecclesiastico, il Vescovo Lindsay Urwin OGS, il quale dopo avere prestato giuramento è stato rivestito con la cappa e la mitra episcopale dai due diaconi cattolico ed ortodosso e, dopo avere scambiato il segno di pace con Gran Priore Ecclesiastico uscente, l’arcivescovo Michele Pennisi, è stato presentato a tutti i cavalieri presenti all’ingresso della cappella ed ha impartito la sua prima benedizione a tutti gli astanti.

Subito dopo ha avuto inizio la processione che dalla cattedrale si è snodata fino alla chiesa capitolare del Sacro Cuore dove ha avuto luogo il Pontificale delle investiture, presieduto dall’arcivescovo Isacchi e concelebrato dall’arcivescovo Pennisi, dall’eparca di piana degli Albanesi, dall’abate di San Martino delle Scale e da altri sacerdoti.

Hanno ricevuto l’investitura il Reverendo Alan Dalton Gentil, Pastore e Capo del Distretto Ecclesiastico della Chiesa Cristiana Evangelica Avventista di Piazza Armerina, il Reverendo Don Vito Impellizzeri, Preside della Pontificia Facoltà teologica di Sicilia, il Reverendo Adriano Frinchi, Diacono del Patriarcato Ortodosso di Mosca ed altri quattro laici.

Alle investiture hanno fatto seguito le promozioni di alcuni membri al grado superiore, fra i quali il Gran Priore Ecclesiastico elevato dal Gran Maestro al rango di Gran Croce Ecclesiastica.

Ha fatto seguito, quindi, il conferimento dell’onorificenza di Membro dei Compagni di Merito dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme conferita a Don Davide Calantoni e la Croce d’oro al merito conferita, quest’ultima, all’arcivescovo Pennisi dal Gran Maestro per il lungo e fruttuoso servizio prestato come Gran Priore Ecclesiastico dell’Ordine.

La giornata si è conclusa con un pranzo presso un vicino ristorante al quale hanno partecipato oltre 80 persone fra cavalieri e familiari intervenuti al rito.

CEREMONIES FOR THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY HAVE CONCLUDED AT THE GRAND BAILIATO OF SICILY

The three-day ceremonies that brought together members of the Grand Bailiwick of Sicily for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity concluded with a resounding success, with the participation of the Grand Master and numerous representatives from various jurisdictions.

On January 23, the International Congress on Ecumenism and Current Perspectives was held at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Sicily, organized by the Lazzarita Academy of Saint Louis IX, King of France. The conference was chaired by the Grand Bailiwick's Major Chaplain, Most Rev. Gualtiero Isacchi, Archbishop of Monreale, and moderated by the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Don Vito Impellizzeri.

Representatives of the Catholic Church, both Latin and Byzantine rites, the Waldensian Church, the Czechoslovakian Hussite Church, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Anglican Church, the Patriarchate of Moscow, and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople participated in the conference.

During the conference, the volume on the Capitular Church of the Sacred Heart was also presented, illustrating the history and artistic beauty, including recent acquisitions, of what has been the Order's institutional headquarters in Sicily since 2019.

On the evening of the conference, a welcome lunch was held at the Circolo Unione in Palermo, attended by members of the Grand Bailiwick's Governing Council, members of the Grand Magisterium present in Palermo, and other heads of jurisdiction. During the lunch, the Grand Master was presented with an octagonal bronze cross from the Crusades period (12th century), and the Ecclesiastical Grand Prior was presented with a hand-painted icon of the Virgin Hodegetria, made by artisans from the Sicilian Byzantine enclave of Piana degli Albanesi.

On Saturday morning, the Grand Master was received by the city authorities of Monreale and toured the cathedral and cloister of Monreale, and the Guglielmo II monumental complex.

On the afternoon of January 24, the solemn ecumenical vigil took place at the Abbey of San Martino delle Scale, concluding the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and preceding the solemn investiture rites on Sunday. The vigil was presided over by the Grand Prior Emeritus of the Order, Monsignor Michele Pennisi, Senior Chaplain Emeritus of the Grand Bailiwick and Archbishop Emeritus of Monreale. The homilies were given by four chaplains of the Order: the Abbot of San Martino delle Scale, Dom Vittorio Rizzone, the Pastor of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Rev. Vincenzo Bottari, Bishop of the Church of England, David Hamid, and Hussite Bishop Lukáš Ian Bujna. At the end of the vigil, the latter awarded the Grand Bailiff, the Major Chaplain, the Chancellor, and the Abbot of San Martino with the gold medal of the Lazarite Auxiliary Service for their exceptional contribution to the cause of ecumenism and devotion to the values ​​of the Order of Saint Lazarus.

Finally, on Sunday morning, at the Roano Chapel, inside the Cathedral of Monreale, in the presence of the Grand Master and presided over by the Major Chaplain of the Grand Bailiwick, Archbishop Isacchi, the solemn rite of oath and installation of the new Ecclesiastical Grand Prior, Bishop Lindsay Urwin OGS, took place. After taking the oath, he was invested with the episcopal cape and mitre by the two Catholic and Orthodox deacons. After exchanging the sign of peace with the outgoing Ecclesiastical Grand Prior, Archbishop Michele Pennisi, he was introduced to all the knights present at the entrance to the chapel and imparted his first blessing to all those present. Immediately afterward, the procession began, winding from the cathedral to the Chapter Church of the Sacred Heart, where the Pontifical Mass of Investitures took place, presided over by Archbishop Isacchi and concelebrated by Archbishop Pennisi, the Eparch of Piana degli Albanesi, the Abbot of San Martino delle Scale, and other priests.

Reverend Alan Dalton Gentil, Pastor and Head of the Ecclesiastical District of the Seventh-day Adventist Evangelical Christian Church of Piazza Armerina, Reverend Don Vito Impellizzeri, Dean of the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Sicily, Reverend Adriano Frinchi, Deacon of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Moscow, and four other lay people received the investitures.

The investitures were followed by the promotion of several members to higher ranks, including the Ecclesiastical Grand Prior, who was elevated by the Grand Master to the rank of Ecclesiastical Grand Cross.

This was followed by the conferral of the honor of Member of the Companions of Merit of the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem to Don Davide Calantoni, and the Gold Cross of Merit to Archbishop Pennisi, awarded by the Grand Master for his long and fruitful service as Ecclesiastical Grand Prior of the Order.

The day concluded with a lunch at a nearby restaurant attended by over 80 people, including knights.
