ISTITUITA LA NUOVA GRAN COMMENDA MAGISTRALE “SAN LUIGI IX RE DI FRANCIA”

Il 50° Gran Maestro dell’Ordine, S.E. Don Francisco de Paula Joaquín de Borbón, Graf von Hardenberg, con decreto del 5 settembre 2026, all’esito di un protocollo d’intesa curato per l’Ordine dal Gran Baliato di Sicilia ed intervenuto nei giorni scorsi tra la maggior parte degli ex appartenenti al Gran Priorato d’Italia, che faceva capo agli Orleans – primo fra tutti il Gran Priore Giovanni Ferrara –, ha istituito una nuova Gran Commenda Magistrale intitolata al Re di Francia San Luigi IX, destinata a raccogliere, in prima battuta gli ex appartenenti al suddetto Gran Priorato che hanno deciso di regolarizzare la loro posizione e destinata ad operare alle dirette dipendenze del Gran Maestro, costituendo essa stessa una nuova giurisdizione sul territorio nazionale operativa prevalentemente nel nord Italia.

Della nuova giurisdizione fanno parte, in prima battuta, circa i 2/3 degli ex appartenenti all’obbedienza orleanista ed avrà a capo come Commendatore Giovanni Ferrara, GCLJ, al quale sarà riconosciuto anche il titolo di Gran Priore Emerito (ex Orleands) d’Italia, mentre il titolo di Gran Commendatore sarà riservato, come per tutte le Gran Commende Magistrali, al Gran Maestro.

Giovanni Ferrara, cattolico praticante, è cresciuto nella famiglia degli Scout. Entrato nell'Ordine nel 1998 in poco tempo ha ricoperto incarichi importanti e, fino al mese di gennaio 2026, è stato Gran Priore d'Italia nell’obbedienza orleanista. Dal 2010 al 2022 ha pure ricoperto la carica di Grande Ospedaliere nell’obbedienza degli Orleans. E’ Presidente dell'Associazione dei Cavalieri di San Lazzaro e della Saint Lazare Italia Onlus, con un ricco patrimonio di donazioni in 20 anni di attività.

NEW “SAINT LOUIS IX, KING OF FRANCE” GRAND MAGISTRAL COMMANDERY ESTABLISHED

By a decree dated September 5^th 2026, the 50th Grand Master of the Order, H.E. Don Francisco de Paula Joaquín de Borbón, Graf von Hardenberg, established a new Magisterial Grand Commandery named after Saint Louis IX, King of France. This initiative followed a memorandum of understanding—facilitated on behalf of the Order by the Grand Bailiwick of Sicily—reached recently with the majority of former members of the Grand Priory of Italy (Orléanist obedience), led by Grand Prior Giovanni Ferrara. The new entity is designed to initially incorporate those former members of the aforementioned Grand Priory who have chosen to regularize their status; it will operate under the direct authority of the Grand Master, constituting a new national jurisdiction active primarily in Northern Italy.

Initially, the new jurisdiction comprises approximately two-thirds of the former members of the Orléanist obedience. It will be led by Commander Giovanni Ferrara, GCLJ, who will also be granted the title of Grand Prior Emeritus (formerly Orléanist) of Italy; the title of Grand Commander, meanwhile, remains reserved for the Grand Master, as is the case for all Magisterial Grand Commanderies.

Giovanni Ferrara, a practicing Catholic, grew up within the Scouting movement. He joined the Order in 1998 and quickly rose to hold significant positions, serving as Grand Prior of Italy for the Orléanist obedience until January 2026. From 2010 to 2022, he also held the office of Grand Hospitaller within the Orléanist obedience. He is the President of the Association of the Knights of Saint Lazarus and of Saint Lazare Italia Onlus, an organization with a substantial record of charitable donations accumulated over twenty years of activity.
