LA RIUNIONE DEI PRIMATI ANGLICANI DEL 29 APRILE – 3 MAGGIO 2024 SI TERRÀ A ROMA PER PELLEGRINAGGIO, CONSULTAZIONE E INCONTRO CON PAPA FRANCESCO

(L’incontro con i Primati anglicani nel 2016)

Gli arcivescovi maggiori, i vescovi che presiedono ed i moderatori delle chiese della Comunione anglicana si incontreranno a Roma per l'incontro dei primati del 2024 (29 aprile-3 maggio). Concepito come un pellegrinaggio, pregheranno e studieranno insieme le Scritture, visiteranno i luoghi santi a Roma e rifletteranno insieme sulla missione e la testimonianza della Chiesa nel mondo.

Nel primo raduno dei primati anglicani che si terrà a Roma, il programma dei primati includerà un incontro con Papa Francesco e una conversazione con il cardinale Grech sul significato e la promessa della sinodalità per tutta la Chiesa.

La città di Roma è piena di significato storico e spirituale per tutto il mondo cristiano. Papa Gregorio Magno inviò Agostino di Canterbury in missione in Inghilterra nel 597. Soprattutto dal Concilio Vaticano II (1962-1965), Roma è stata un centro di incontro intercristiano e di ricerca ecumenica.

Dentro e intorno al loro incontro, i primati intraprenderanno un pellegrinaggio in città, visitando sia la Basilica di San Pietro che la Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura (dove è sepolto San Paolo Apostolo), oltre alle visite a Tre Fontane, Santa Maria a Trastevere e alla Comunità di Sant'Egidio.

I primati saranno ospitati dall'arcivescovo Ian Ernest, direttore del Centro anglicano di Roma e membro del Gran Baliato di Sicilia dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme.

L'incontro dei primati è uno degli "strumenti" della Comunione anglicana, che lavora per l'unità tra le chiese anglicane a livello globale. Gli altri strumenti sono il Consiglio consultivo anglicano, la Conferenza di Lambeth e l'arcivescovo di Canterbury.

Ai primati verrà anche chiesto di impegnarsi e rispondere a un documento della Commissione permanente inter-anglicana sull'unità, la fede e l'ordine (IASCUFO), commissionata dal Consiglio consultivo anglicano (ACC) nel 2023. Il documento esamina la struttura e il processo decisionale nella Comunione anglicana e offre proposte per aiutare ad affrontare la differenza e il disaccordo nella Comunione anglicana. IASCUFO riferisce a tutti e quattro gli strumenti della Comunione anglicana e porterà il suo documento alla prossima riunione dell'ACC nel 2026.

L'arcivescovo Ian Ernest del Centro Anglicano di Roma, ha dichiarato: “Il Centro Anglicano di Roma cerca di essere una realtà vivente dell'impegno della Comunione per l'unità della Chiesa, lavorando in collaborazione con tutti i cristiani per la giustizia e la pace nel mondo. Non vediamo l'ora di accogliere i primati anglicani nel centro per la preghiera, il pellegrinaggio e la conversazione”.

Come segretariato della Comunione anglicana, il personale dell'Ufficio della Comunione anglicana di Londra sosterrà la riunione dei primati.

Dalla sua istituzione nel 1978 dall'allora arcivescovo di Canterbury Donald Coggan, l'incontro dei primati si è coordinato strettamente sia con il Consiglio consultivo anglicano che con la Conferenza Lambeth.

ANGLICAN PRIMATES MEETING APRIL 29 - MAY 3, 2024 TO BE HELD IN ROME FOR PILGRIMAGE, CONSULTATION AND MEETING WITH POPE FRANCIS

Senior archbishops, presiding bishops, and moderators of the churches of the Anglican Communion will meet in Rome for the 2024 Primates’ Meeting (April 29-May 3). Conceived as a pilgrimage, they will pray and study Scripture together, visit holy sites in Rome, and reflect together about the mission and witness of the Church in the world.

In the first gathering of Anglican Primates to be held in Rome, the Primates’ programme will include a meeting with Pope Francis and conversation with Cardinal Grech about the meaning and promise of synodality for the whole Church. 

The city of Rome is full of historical and spiritual significance for the whole Christian world. Pope Gregory the Great sent Augustine of Canterbury on mission to England in 597. Especially since the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), Rome has been a centre of inter-Christian encounter and ecumenical research. 

In and around their meeting, the primates will undertake a pilgrimage in the city, visiting both St Peter’s Basilica and the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (where St Paul the Apostle is buried), besides visits to Tre Fontane, Santa Maria in Trastevere, and the Community of Sant’Egidio. 

The primates will be hosted by Archbishop Ian Ernest, Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome and member of the Grand Bailiwick of Sicily of the Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem.

The Primates’ Meeting is one of the ‘Instruments’ of the Anglican Communion, that works for unity amongst Anglican churches globally. The other instruments are The Anglican Consultative Council, The Lambeth Conference and The Archbishop of Canterbury.

The primates will also be asked to engage and respond to a paper by the Inter-Anglican Standing Commission on Unity, Faith and Order (IASCUFO), commissioned by the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) in 2023. The paper looks at structure and decision-making in the Anglican Communion and offers proposals to help address difference and disagreement in the Anglican Communion. IASCUFO reports to all four Instruments of the Anglican Communion and will carry its paper to the next meeting of the ACC in 2026.

Archbishop Ian Ernest from the Anglican Centre in Rome, said: “The Anglican Centre in Rome seeks to be a living reality of the Communion’s commitment to Church unity, working collaboratively with all Christians for justice and peace in the world. We are looking forward to welcoming Anglican primates to the centre for prayer, pilgrimage, and conversation.” 

As secretariat to the Anglican Communion, staff from the Anglican Communion Office in London will support the Primates’ Meeting. 

Bishop Anthony Poggo, The Secretary General of the Anglican Communion said: “At the Anglican Communion Office, we pray for all the primates of the Anglican Communion. We give thanks for the collaboration of the Anglican Centre in Rome and our sisters and brothers at the Vatican, who have worked so hard to support this important meeting.”

Since its establishment in 1978 by then-Archbishop of Canterbury Donald Coggan, the Primates’ Meeting has coordinated closely with both the Anglican Consultative Council and the Lambeth Conference.
