MESSAGGIO PASQUALE DEL GRAN PRIORE ECCLESIASTICO DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI GERUSALEMME

Carissimi Confratelli e Consorelle dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme.

Si narra che ai tempi del Signore fosse consuetudine per i pastori, sorpresi a radunare le proprie greggi al calar della notte, condividendo uno dei grandi recinti che punteggiavano la campagna, per riposarsi e proteggersi dagli animali selvatici. La mattina seguente, ogni pastore chiamava le proprie pecore, le quali, riconoscendo la voce del proprio pastore, lo seguivano con calma, fiduciose che le avrebbe condotte ad acque tranquille e a verdi pascoli. So che questa pratica è ancora diffusa in Medio Oriente.

Si dice anche che le giovani pecore che non avevano ancora imparato a riconoscere la voce del loro padrone diventassero, in modo pietoso, profondamente ansiose, arrivando persino a sbattere la testa contro i muri di pietra del recinto.

Tra le storie che circondano la risurrezione di Gesù, una delle più belle è quella narrata nel Vangelo di San Giovanni. Maria Maddalena, a cui molto è stato perdonato, si reca al sepolcro. È per amore che è lì. Non si aspetta di incontrare il Signore né di udire la voce che ha imparato a conoscere e di cui si fida. Lei è come tanti altri amanti, madri e figli che, di generazione in generazione, si recano nei cimiteri e nei sagrati per stare vicino alle spoglie mortali dei loro cari. Un viaggio non irragionevole, anzi, più che ragionevole. Non è l'intelletto, ma il cuore che li spinge lì.

Beh, conoscete la storia.

Trovando la pietra rotolata via, corre da Pietro e dal discepolo che Gesù amava. È una cosa meravigliosa che abbia trovato Pietro, che solo due giorni prima aveva rinnegato persino di conoscere Gesù, insieme a Giovanni, l'unico che era rimasto con Gesù fino alla sua morte. Appoggiato al petto di Gesù, Giovanni deve aver compreso che il cuore del Salvatore è un cuore che perdona. Non gli serba rancore per il peccato di Pietro. Mi vengono in mente le bellissime parole di San Giovanni Crisostomo in un sermone di Pasqua: "Nessuno si lamenti di essere caduto più e più volte; perché il perdono è risorto dalla tomba...".

Corrono verso la tomba.

L'inglese a volte non è molto utile! La stessa parola "vedere" può tradurre parole greche diverse! Giovanni guarda dentro e "vede" le bende di lino, ma solo come le vediamo noi a occhio nudo, senza riflessi. Pietro entra davvero e vede di più. La parola greca "theoreo" ha il senso di uno sguardo lungo e attento. Noi inglesi la deriviamo con la parola "theatre", gli italiani con "teatro" e i siciliani con "tiatru"! Ora Giovanni entra e "vede". La parola greca usata significa vedere con comprensione. Lui crede... Preghiamo Dio che questo sia il nostro modo di "vedere" il vuoto della tomba!

Pietro e Giovanni tornano a casa, e Maria rimane lì a piangere.

Ma una trasformazione avviene nella sua vita quando, appena si alza, il Buon Pastore, la cui voce non ha eguali, la chiama dolcemente per nome. Lui la conosce. Lei è sua. Anche se molti non l'hanno riconosciuto, continuando a sbattere la testa contro muri di pietra, lei ha imparato a riconoscerlo. "Maria". È sufficiente. Non più ansiosa e confusa, pur non comprendendo ancora come Egli debba ascendere e continuare ad essere presente con lei, con tutti loro, mediante il dono del suo Spirito, ella va a dire agli altri: «Ho visto il Signore». È il messaggio della Chiesa.

In un altro sermone, lo stesso Giovanni Crisostomo consola il predicatore a Pasqua, e in effetti tutti noi chiamati ad annunciare quel messaggio: «Così come non posso esprimere pienamente a parole la sua nascita, così non posso comprendere appieno la sua uscita dal sepolcro».

Fratelli e sorelle, non possiamo esprimere appieno il significato, ma esso permea la nostra vita. Siamo immersi in misteri, il cui significato si erge al di sopra di noi. Come la Santa Madre, li meditiamo nel nostro cuore. E forse, permettendo ai misteri della sua morte e risurrezione di illuminare e riempire i nostri cuori, possiamo scoprire che Colui che è esaltato alla destra del Padre nei luoghi celesti, dimora davvero con noi, più vicino a noi di quanto lo siamo noi stessi. Il cuore parla al cuore. Che mistero! Che gioia!

Che questa gioia vi pervada di nuovo in questo tempo pasquale e vi dia il coraggio di esserne testimoni.

EASTER MESSAGE FROM THE GRAND ECCLESIASTICAL PRIOR OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF JERUSALEM

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem,

It is said that in the time of the Lord it was the practise for a number of shepherds caught out at nightfall to gather their flocks together sharing one of the large pens that dotted the countryside, for rest and protection from wild animals. Early the following morning, each shepherd would call to his own sheep, who, recognising their own shepherds voice would calmly follow him, knowing and trusting that he would lead them to still waters and green pastures. I understand that this practise may still be seen in the Middle East today.

It is also said that young sheep who had not yet learned their master’s voice would in a pitiable way become deeply anxious, even butting their heads against the stone walls of the sheep pen.

Among the stories that surround the resurrection of Jesus, among the most beautiful is recorded in St John’s Gospel. Mary Magdelene, of whom much has been forgiven, makes her way to the tomb. It is for love that she is there. She is not expecting to meet the Lord or hear the voice she has come to know and trust. She is just like so many lovers and mothers and children through the generations who journey to churchyards and cemeteries just to be near where the mortal remains of the ones they love are buried. Though not an unreasonable journey, it is more than reasonable. It is not the intellect, but the heart that draws them there.

Well, you know the story.

Finding the stone rolled away she runs to Peter and the disciple Jesus loved. It is a marvellous thing that she found Peter, who just two days before had denied even knowing Jesus, together with John, the only one who had stayed with Jesus until his death. Resting on the breast of Jesus, John must have learned that the heart of the Saviour is a forgiving heart. He does not hold Peter’s sin against him. I am reminded of some beautiful words of St John Chrysostom in an Easter Sermon: “Let no one mourn that he has fallen again, and again; for forgiveness has risen from the grave..”

They run to the tomb.

English is sometimes not very useful! The same word ‘see’ can translates different Greek words! John looks in and ‘sees’ the linen cloths but only the way we look with the naked eye, without reflection. Peter actually goes in and sees more. The Greek word ‘theoreo’ has the sense of a long and careful look. We English get our word theatre from it, Italians, ‘teatro’ and Sicilians ‘tiatru’! John now goes in and ‘sees’. The Greek word used means to see with understanding. He believes…Pray God this is our way of ‘seeing’ the emptiness of the tomb!

Peter and John go home, and Mary stands weeping.

But a transformation in her life happens when her now risen Good Shepherd, whose voice is like no other gently calls her name. He knows her. She is his. Though so many have not recognised it, continuing to butt their heads against stone walls, she has learned to recognise it. “Mary.” It is enough. No longer anxious and confused, though not yet understanding how he must ascend and continue to be present with her, with them all, by the gift of his Spirit, she goes to tell the others, “I have seen the Lord.” It is the Church’s message.

In another sermon, the same John Chrysostom gives comfort to the preacher at Easter, and indeed to all of us called to proclaim that message: “Just as I cannot fully express his birth in words, neither can I wholly encompass his going forth from the tomb”.

Brothers and sisters, we cannot fully express the meaning, but it informs our life. We are involved in mysteries, the meaning of which tower above us. Like the Holy Mother, we mull over them in our hearts. And maybe, in allowing the mysteries of his death and resurrection to inform and fill our hearts we can find that the one who is exalted at the right hand of the Father in the heavenly places, is indeed abiding with us, closer to us than we are to ourselves. Heart is speaking to heart. What a mystery. What a joy!

May that joy fill you afresh this Eastertide and give you courage to be his witnesses.
