PUBBLICATO IL REPORT DEL GRANDE OSPEDALIERE PER L’ANNO 2025

Originariamente fondato nel V secolo come istituzione di assistenza per le vittime della lebbra su iniziativa dei Padri Cappadoci della Chiesa, l’Ordine lazzarita è sopravvissuto alle turbolenze del tempo per diventare un moderno Ordine Cavalleresco la cui missione è assistere i poveri e i bisognosi della società.

Naturalmente, mentre le vittime della lebbra sono sempre state, e spesso lo sono ancora, stigmatizzate ed emarginate dalla società, oggi esistono altri gruppi che soffrono di stigmatizzazione da parte del resto della comunità in cui vivono: gli anziani, i poveri, i migranti, ecc.

Tendiamo a considerare la stigmatizzazione delle vittime della lebbra come un problema limitato ai luoghi in cui la malattia è ancora endemica, il cosiddetto mondo in via di sviluppo.

Tuttavia, è sconvolgente scoprire che la legislazione americana e australiana includano ancora leggi che discriminano specificamente queste persone sfortunate. È qui che noi, come organismo nazionale e internazionale, dobbiamo assumere il nostro altro ruolo: quello militare.

Sfortunatamente, molti membri non comprendono appieno cosa significhi essere

un Ordine Militare: potrebbero equipararlo semplicemente all'indossare un'uniforme di tipo militare con medaglie luccicanti, traducendo così questo ruolo in "bambini che giocano a fare i soldati".

Essere membri di un Ordine Militare Cristiano ha un significato più profondo. Dobbiamo davvero assumere il ruolo di Crociati per Cristo, impegnandoci con tutte le nostre forze a combattere le ingiustizie che vengono perpetrate intorno a noi. Dobbiamo far sentire la nostra voce ogni volta che i nostri governi o la nostra comunità agiscono in modo tale da causare la stigmatizzazione e la discriminazione di gruppi marginali.

Non dobbiamo temere le potenziali ripercussioni, perché dopotutto il messaggio di Gesù è chiaro: «Sarete odiati da tutti a causa del mio nome, ma chi persevererà fino alla fine sarà salvato» [Matteo 10:22].

La Chiesa primitiva era ben felice di soffrire per le sue convinzioni: «Gli apostoli lasciarono il Sinedrio, rallegrandosi di essere stati ritenuti degni di subire oltraggi per il Nome» [Atti 5:41].

Quindi, come Giobbe, lasciamoci sfidare a «Alzarti come un uomo e preparati alla battaglia» [Giobbe 40:7-9].

Spezziamo i gioghi che ci impediscono di agire per difendere i principi cristiani dall'erosione.

THE GRAND HOSPITALLER'S REPORT HAS BEEN PUBLISHED FOR THE YEAR 2025

Originally founded in the 5th century as an institution to care for leprosy victims at the initiative of the Cappadocian Fathers of the Church, the Lazarite Order has survived the turbulence of time to become a modern Order of Chivalry whose mission is to assist the poor and needy in society.

Of course, while leprosy victims have always been, and often still are, stigmatized and marginalized by society, today there are other groups who suffer stigmatization from the rest of the community in which they live: the elderly, the poor, migrants, etc.

We tend to think of the stigmatization of leprosy victims as a problem limited to places where the disease is still endemic, the so-called developing world.

However, it is shocking to discover that American and Australian legislation still includes laws that specifically discriminate against these unfortunate individuals. This is where we, as a national and international body, must embrace our other role: the military.

Unfortunately, many members don't fully understand what it means to be a Military Order: they might equate it with simply wearing a military-style uniform with shiny medals, thus translating this role into "children playing at being soldiers."

Being a member of a Christian Military Order has a deeper meaning. We must truly embrace the role of Crusaders for Christ, committing ourselves wholeheartedly to fighting the injustices being perpetrated around us. We must speak out whenever our governments or our communities act in ways that cause stigmatization and discrimination against marginalized groups.

We must not fear the potential repercussions, for after all, Jesus' message is clear: "You will be hated by all for my name's sake, but he who endures to the end will be saved" [Matthew 10:22].

The early Church was happy to suffer for its beliefs: "The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the Name" [Acts 5:41].

So, like Job, let us be challenged to "Stand up like a man and prepare for battle" [Job 40:7-9].

Let us break the yokes that prevent us from acting to defend Christian principles from erosion.
