28-29 SETTEMBRE 2024 - 5° ANNIVERSARIO DELLA INSTALLAZIONE DEL GRAN BALIATO DI SICILIA DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO

Il 28 settembre 2019, presso la Chiesa Capitolare del Sacro Cuore in Monreale, aveva luogo la solenne cerimonia per l’installazione del Gran Baliato di Sicilia, presieduta da S.E. Rev.ma Mons. Michele Pennisi, Arcivescovo di Monreale e Gran Priore Ecclesiastico dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme, alla presenza del Gran Maestro Emerito dell’Ordine, S.E. Don Francisco de Paula de Borbòn y Escasany, 5° Duca di Siviglia e Grande di Spagna, del Gran Cancelliere e del Gran Maresciallo dell’Ordine, momento di definitivo approdo della Delegazione dell’Ordine istituita a Monreale qualche anno prima dal compianto 49° Gran Maestro S.E. Don Carlos Gereda de Borbòn, Marchese di Almazàn.

Alla cerimonia partecipavano 30 postulanti, con le rispettive famiglie, che si apprestavano a divenire membri dell’Ordine, tra i quali il Molto Reverendo Archimandrita Chihade Abboud, Apocrisario di Sua Beatitudine il Patriarca Melkita Youssef Absi presso la Santa Sede e Rettore della Basilica di Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Archimandrita che era presente anche nella veste di rappresentante del Patriarca Melkita d’Antiochia, Protettore dell’Ordine, il Commendatore della Gran Commenda del Castello di Malta ed il Gran Priore d’Italia, giurisdizione, quest’ultima, alla quale fino a quel momento era appartenuta la Sicilia che, da quel momento, diventava del tutto autonoma.

L’indomani un solenne pontificale celebrato nel Duomo di Monreale dal Gran Priore Ecclesiastico dell’Ordine segnava il momento conclusivo dell’evento e consegnava alla storia l’avvenuto rientro in Sicilia di uno degli Ordine laicali più antichi della cristianità.

On 28 September 2019, at the Capitular Church of the Sacred Heart in Monreale, the solemn ceremony for the installation of the Grand Bailiwick of Sicily took place, presided over by H. E. Most Rev. Michele Pennisi, Archbishop of Monreale and Ecclesiastical Grand Prior of the Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, in the presence of the Grand Master Emeritus of the Order, H. E. Don Francisco de Paula de Borbòn y Escasany, 5th Duke of Seville and Grand of Spain, the Grand Chancellor and Grand Marshal of the Order. This was the definitive landing place of the Order's Delegation established in Monreale a few years earlier by the late 49th Grand Master H.E. Don Carlos Gereda de Borbòn, Marquis of Almazàn.

The ceremony was attended by 30 postulants, with their respective families, who were preparing to become members of the Order, including the Very Reverend Archimandrite Chihade Abboud, Apocrisary of His Beatitude Patriarch Melkita Youssef Absi at the Holy See and Rector of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Archimandrite who was also present in the capacity of representative of the Melkite Patriarch of Antioch, Protector of the Order, the Commander of the Grand Commandery of the Castle of Malta and the Grand Prior of Italy, the latter jurisdiction to which Sicily had belonged until then, which from that moment on became completely autonomous.

The following day, a solemn pontifical ceremony celebrated in the Cathedral of Monreale by the Order's Grand Ecclesiastical Prior marked the final moment of the event and consigned to history the return to Sicily of one of the oldest lay Orders in Christianity.
