MESSAGGIO PER LA QUARESIMA 2022 DEL RESPONSABILE PER L’ECUMENISMO DEL GRAN BALIATO DI SICILIA

Fratelli e sorelle dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro,

in un tempo così teso, tempo di divisione, tempo di lotte e di guerra fratricida, ascoltiamo la voce della Chiesa e del Vangelo per permettere a Dio di operare nei nostri cuori.

Il Signore Gesù Cristo dà la definizione più chiara della vera vita degli uomini: «Io sono la via, la verità e la vita» (cfr Gv 14, 6).

Una vita che segue la Vita stessa e il pensiero della vita nella Chiesa antica è sempre stata connessa unicamente con Cristo, la Sua vita e la Sua opera. Per la Chiesa antica Egli è modello ed esempio di comportamento, in relazione, da un lato, con la vita nell'intera comunità cristiana e, dall'altro, con la vita nel mondo al di fuori di essa. Cristo dona la vita, ma avverte anche non solo i cristiani, ma il mondo intero: «Vi lascio la pace, vi do la mia pace. Non come la dà il mondo, io la do a voi. Non sia turbato il vostro cuore e non abbia timore» (cfr Gv 14,27).

Questi esempi mostrano che la base di tutte le nostre azioni deve essere la pace del Signore. Naturalmente, questo è difficile da fare e sta diventando più difficile nella vita moderna in cui viviamo. La storia mostra quanto sia stato difficile per i cristiani, sin dalla fondazione della Chiesa, così come per tutti coloro che cercano la pace nel mondo, applicarla e realizzarla nella vita: essere operatori di pace.

Ma Cristo, conoscendo questa difficoltà, comanda con chiarezza: «Beati gli operatori di pace, perché saranno chiamati figli di Dio» (cfr Mt 5, 9). Questo è il nostro esempio e la nostra vita nella Vita, che non va trascurata, non dobbiamo essere negligenti con i suoi comandamenti, non dobbiamo essere pigri, non dobbiamo testimoniare contro di Lui, non dobbiamo isolarci da Lui, non dobbiamo voltarci le spalle alla nostra vocazione di cristiani, non dobbiamo non essere i Suoi operatori di pace! Anzi!

Dio è amore (1 Gv 4, 8). L'uomo, come Dio, porta in sé l'amore ed è naturalmente desideroso di amare Dio e il prossimo. Ma purtroppo, come conseguenza del peccato, l'amore si riduce al minimo, diventa sempre più limitato, passa da un dono perfetto a un sentimento imperfetto, cambia dall'amore dell'uomo e del prossimo all'amore del proprio io. L'amore divino così donato a noi si trasforma in un egoismo. L'allontanamento da Dio porta alla privazione della grazia salvifica di Dio, che ci dona il dono dell'amore e della pace. Senza amore, la vita umana perde il suo significato e contenuto fondamentale e non può realizzare il suo scopo.

Il Sole di giustizia, Cristo Dio venne sulla terra come messaggero di pace: «Dio infatti ha tanto amato il mondo da dare il suo Figlio unigenito, perché chiunque crede in lui non muoia, ma abbia la vita eterna» (Gv 3, 16). ) per proclamare «Misericordia Io voglio e non sacrificio» (cf. Mt 9,13) e dare la Sua vita per la riconciliazione degli uomini con Dio e in mezzo a loro, affinché tutti insieme agli angeli possano proclamare per sempre “Gloria a Dio nel più alto dei cieli e pace in terra agli uomini che egli ama”(Lc 2, 14).

La pace è un riflesso dell'amore tra le persone. La pacificazione si basa sull'amore e sul comandamento di Gesù Cristo: “Che vi amiate gli uni gli altri; come Io vi ho amato, così amatevi anche voi gli uni gli altri» (Gv 13,34). Trascurare questo stesso comandamento, che dovrebbe distinguere i cristiani da tutti gli altri, è in realtà una mancanza di rispetto alla Sua volontà di pace. L'opposto della pace è la guerra. La guerra è contro Cristo e la Sua pace. La guerra inizia dentro il cuore dei cristiani ed è una conseguenza della mancanza di amore – un cuore senz'anima. Il fatto è che chi non fa guerra a se stesso, alle proprie passioni e non rispetta la pace di Cristo, inevitabilmente la fa contro Dio e il prossimo.

Purtroppo, in questo momento, sia i cristiani che tutte le persone nel mondo sono messi alla prova dalla fede, ma la cosa peggiore è che la vita di tutti è in pericolo. Proprio per la mancanza di pace, per la mancanza della pace di Cristo, per l'oblio e la disobbedienza ai suoi comandamenti, per il desiderio di acquisire cose temporanee e transitorie, la pace sulla terra è minacciata. Ciò ha portato al disprezzo dei valori umani fondamentali: il diritto alla libertà, il diritto alla vita, il diritto alla pace. Ciò ha portato a una spaccatura nel rapporto tra i cristiani e in particolare i cristiani ortodossi, il che è un fatto triste.

È con grande dolore che condividiamo che tutto ciò che sta accadendo nel mondo in questo momento è contrario alla pace di Cristo e alla Sua volontà. È disgustoso e impensabile per i cristiani combattere contro i cristiani, i cristiani ortodossi che sono uniti nel Corpo di Cristo sono costretti a combattere tra loro e a mettere alla prova e compromettere la loro fede nel Signore Gesù Cristo e nella Sua missione nel mondo.

Chiediamo a Dio Onnipotente che mandi la sua pace tra gli uomini e che siano testimoni della Sua opera salvifica.

Nel giorno del perdono (Domenica del perdono per la Chiesa ortodossa) con un augurio di pace nel mondo e umiltà davanti al nostro Creatore, all'inizio della Quaresima pasquale, auguriamo che la benedizione di Dio e la Sua pace siano con tutti voi!

MESSAGE FOR LENT 2022 BY THE OFFICER FOR ECUMENISM OF THE GRAND BALIATE OF SICILY

Brothers and sisters of the Order of St Lazarus,

in such a tense time, a time of division, a time of strife and fratricidal warfare, let us listen to the voice of the Church and the Gospel to allow God to work in our hearts.

The Lord Jesus Christ gives the clearest definition of true human life: "I am the way, the truth and the life" (cf. Jn 14:6).

A life that follows the Life itself and the thought of life in the early Church has always been connected solely with Christ, His life and His work. For the early Church He is a model and example of behaviour, in relation, on the one hand, to life in the whole Christian community and, on the other, to life in the world outside it. Christ gives life, but he also warns not only Christians, but the whole world: "I leave you peace, I give you my peace. Not as the world gives it, I give it to you. Let not your heart be troubled and fear" (cf. Jn 14:27).

These examples show that the basis of all our actions must be the peace of the Lord. Of course, this is difficult to do and is becoming more difficult in the modern life in which we live. History shows how difficult it has been for Christians, since the founding of the Church, as well as for all those who seek peace in the world, to apply it and realise it in life: to be peacemakers.

But Christ, knowing this difficulty, commands clearly: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God" (cf. Mt 5:9). This is our example and our life in Life, which must not be neglected, we must not be negligent with His commandments, we must not be lazy, we must not testify against Him, we must not isolate ourselves from Him, we must not turn our backs on our vocation as Christians, we must not fail to be His peacemakers! On the contrary!

God is love (1 Jn 4:8). Man, like God, carries love within himself and is naturally eager to love God and neighbour. But unfortunately, as a consequence of sin, love is reduced to a minimum, becomes more and more limited, passes from a perfect gift to an imperfect feeling, changes from love of man and neighbour to love of self. The divine love thus given to us turns into selfishness. The estrangement from God leads to the deprivation of God's saving grace, which gives us the gift of love and peace. Without love, human life loses its fundamental meaning and content and cannot fulfil its purpose.

The Sun of Justice, Christ God came to earth as a messenger of peace: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (Jn 3:16). ) to proclaim "I want mercy and not sacrifice" (cf. Mt 9:13) and to give His life for the reconciliation of mankind with God and in their midst, so that all together with the angels may proclaim for ever "Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth to those whom He loves" (Lk 2:14).

Peace is a reflection of love between people. Peace is based on love and on the commandment of Jesus Christ: "Love one another; as I have loved you, so you must love one another" (Jn 13:34). To neglect this very commandment, which is supposed to distinguish Christians from all others, is actually a disrespect of His will for peace. The opposite of peace is war. War is against Christ and His peace. War begins within the hearts of Christians and is a consequence of a lack of love - a soulless heart. The fact is that those who do not wage war against themselves, their passions and do not respect the peace of Christ, inevitably wage war against God and their neighbour.

Sadly, at this time, both Christians and all people in the world are being tested by faith, but the worst thing is that everyone's life is in danger. Precisely because of the lack of peace, the lack of the peace of Christ, the neglect and disobedience of his commandments, the desire to acquire temporary and transitory things, peace on earth is threatened. This has led to a disregard for fundamental human values: the right to freedom, the right to life, the right to peace. This has led to a rift in the relationship between Christians and especially Orthodox Christians, which is a sad fact.

It is with great sorrow that we share that everything that is happening in the world at the moment is contrary to the peace of Christ and His will. It is disgusting and unthinkable for Christians to fight against Christians, Orthodox Christians who are united in the Body of Christ are forced to fight among themselves and to test and compromise their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and His mission in the world.

Let us ask Almighty God to send His peace among people and let them be witnesses of His saving work.

On the Day of Forgiveness (Forgiveness Sunday for the Orthodox Church) with a wish for peace in the world and humility before our Creator, at the beginning of Easter Lent, we wish that God's blessing and His peace be with you all!
