Il Conte Johann Hermann von Fersen (in russo: Иван Иванович Герман фон Ферзен, romanizzato: Ivan Ivanovich German fon Ferzen; 1740 – 9 giugno 1801) fu un ufficiale dell'esercito imperiale russo. Nato nell'Elettorato di Sassonia, si arruolò nell'esercito russo nel 1770.

Partecipò alle battaglie di Larga e Kagul durante la guerra russo-turca del 1768-1774 e alle operazioni militari contro Yemelyan Pugachev. Vinse la battaglia dell'Alto Kuban contro Seraskier Batal-Bey e i suoi 18.000 turchi e 15.000 montanari, catturando Batal-Bey e tutto il suo accampamento. Nel 1792 fu nominato quartiermastro generale sotto Mikhail Kretchetnikov in Lituania e nel 1794 comandò un corpo speciale in Polonia.

Sotto Paolo I di Russia, prestò servizio prima come quartiermastro generale e poi comandò il contingente russo nella fallita invasione anglo-russa dell'Olanda del 1799. Fu sconfitto nella battaglia di Bergen e fatto prigioniero. Prima che la notizia della sua sconfitta raggiungesse San Pietroburgo, era già stato promosso generale di fanteria, ma in seguito fu espulso dal servizio dallo zar Paolo.

Il prigioniero Hermann fu inviato alla fortezza di Lilla. I francesi erano pronti a scambiarlo con tutti i generali francesi fatti prigionieri in Italia, ma Paolo I non acconsentì e Hermann rimase prigioniero fino alla conclusione della pace. Al suo ritorno dalla prigionia, Hermann fornì una spiegazione delle sue azioni e il 6 novembre 1800 fu riammesso nell'esercito russo, ma non ricevette ulteriori incarichi.

Questi sfortunati eventi ebbero ripercussioni sulla sua salute e il 9 giugno 1801 morì a San Pietroburgo.

Il Re di Francia Luigi XVIII nel 1800, durante il suo viaggio in Russia, lo ammise come membro onorario (essendo lui non cattolico) nell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme.

Count Johann Hermann von Fersen (Russian: Иван Иванович Герман фон Ферзен, romanized: Ivan Ivanovich German fon Ferzen; 1740 – June 9, 1801) was an officer in the Imperial Russian Army. Born in the Electorate of Saxony, he enlisted in the Russian Army in 1770.

He participated in the battles of Larga and Kagul during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774 and in the military operations against Yemelyan Pugachev. He won the Battle of the Upper Kuban against Seraskier Batal-Bey and his 18,000 Turks and 15,000 mountaineers, capturing Batal-Bey and his entire camp. In 1792, he was appointed quartermaster general under Mikhail Kretchetnikov in Lithuania, and in 1794, he commanded a special corps in Poland.

Under Paul I of Russia, he served first as quartermaster general and then commanded the Russian contingent in the failed Anglo-Russian invasion of the Netherlands in 1799. He was defeated at the Battle of Bergen and taken prisoner. Before news of his defeat reached St. Petersburg, he had already been promoted to general of infantry, but was later dismissed from service by Tsar Paul.

The captive Hermann was sent to the fortress of Lille. The French were prepared to exchange him for all the French generals taken prisoner in Italy, but Paul I refused, and Hermann remained a prisoner until peace was concluded. Upon his return from captivity, Hermann provided an explanation for his actions and was readmitted to the Russian army on November 6, 1800, but received no further assignments.

These unfortunate events had repercussions on his health, and he died in St. Petersburg on June 9, 1801.

In 1800, during his trip to Russia, King Louis XVIII of France admitted him as an honorary member (since he was not Catholic) of the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem.
